The Port of Antwerp-Bruges, the second largest port in Europe, is committed to becoming a climate-neutral energy hub by 2050. One of its initiatives is to develop a hydrogen economy that can reduce CO₂ emissions and provide green energy and feedstock for various sectors. The port is collaborating with CMB.TECH, a maritime technology company, to build and operate the Hydrotug, the world's first hydrogen-powered tugboat. The Hydrotug will use dual-fuel engines that can run on hydrogen and diesel, and will have zero emissions when operating on hydrogen. The tugboat is expected to be operational by 2023 and will demonstrate the feasibility and potential of hydrogen as a maritime fuel. The Hydrotug is part of the port's broader vision to become a European import hub for green hydrogen and to support the transition to a circular economy.
