The Sri Lanka Ports Authority, has initiated the "Wave" project to achieve the country's National Climate Change targets. This project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in port operations, addressing the challenges of sustainability financing in a developing country.

Challenge / Goal

• To collaborate with all terminal operators and port stakeholders to contribute to the NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY OF SRI LANKA – Focusing on GHG Emission reduction in the Energy Sector and Transport Sector

• Implement and promote smaller projects targeting GHG emission reduction so that the cumulative effect as a port is higher.

• Creating a dialogue among port stakeholders on GHG emission reduction and increasing awareness of the public on the importance of it.

Solution

The main solutions to the challenges are:

To invest in digitalization and infrastructure to increase the efficiency of port call and operations.
To electrify port equipment such as cranes, forklifts, tugs, etc., to reduce fossil fuel consumption and emissions.
To use solar energy to power the port authority offices and other facilities.
To commit to carbon footprint monitoring and reporting using internationally recognized standards and tools.
To investigate and plan for the provision of onshore power supply to vessels at berth, which can reduce emissions from auxiliary engines.
