Challenge / Goal
• To collaborate with all terminal operators and port stakeholders to contribute to the NATIONAL CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY OF SRI LANKA – Focusing on GHG Emission reduction in the Energy Sector and Transport Sector
• Implement and promote smaller projects targeting GHG emission reduction so that the cumulative effect as a port is higher.
• Creating a dialogue among port stakeholders on GHG emission reduction and increasing awareness of the public on the importance of it.
Solution
The main solutions to the challenges are:
- To invest in digitalization and infrastructure to increase the efficiency of port call and operations.
- To electrify port equipment such as cranes, forklifts, tugs, etc., to reduce fossil fuel consumption and emissions.
- To use solar energy to power the port authority offices and other facilities.
- To commit to carbon footprint monitoring and reporting using internationally recognized standards and tools.
- To investigate and plan for the provision of onshore power supply to vessels at berth, which can reduce emissions from auxiliary engines.
