Challenge / Goal
The main challenge was to increase the Port of Callao’s operational capacity while simultaneously reducing its carbon footprint. As Peru’s major trade gateway, handling nearly 90% of the country’s container traffic, the port needed to modernize its infrastructure to handle increasing demand efficiently. The goal was to achieve significant decarbonization, aligning with the global targets set by DP World for carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Solution
The Port of Callao introduced 15 electric cranes, including three Super Post Panamax quay cranes and 12 yard cranes, powered entirely by electricity. This upgrade is part of the broader $400 million Muelle Bicentenario Project, aimed at expanding the terminal’s capacity by 80%. The cranes, with their high loading capacities, enhance the terminal’s handling capabilities, making operations faster and more efficient. Additionally, the port has established the first electric charging station for trucks in Latin America, supporting a fleet of newly acquired electric terminal tractors to further reduce emissions.
