Challenge / Goal

The maritime sector is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, responsible for about 3% of the total. As other industries make strides in reducing their carbon footprint, the proportion of emissions from shipping is likely to increase if no action is taken. Historically, maritime transport has lacked stringent greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, unlike other transport sectors in the EU. The challenge lies in reversing this trend by achieving large-scale decarbonization in an industry characterized by its global reach and heavy reliance on fossil fuels. The goal of the European Green Corridors Network is to establish a sustainable and scalable model for zero-emission shipping corridors. These green corridors will serve as practical examples of how alternative fuels and new technologies can be integrated into the existing maritime infrastructure

Solution
  • Pre-implementation: Identify potential routes, vessel types, and fuels.
  • Feasibility: Assess technical, legal, and economic feasibility.
  • Implementation: Establish green corridors.
  • Stakeholder Involvement: Engage public and private stakeholders to activate the value chain.
