Challenge / Goal

The challenge is to reduce the amount of litter that enters and accumulates in the Thames, which is hazardous to shipping, wildlife and habitats. The goal is to protect the environmental health of the tidal river and prevent plastic pollution from reaching the ocean.

Solution

The solution is to use passive debris collectors (PDCs), also known as litter collectors, that are positioned in strategic points along the river, outside the navigational channel, to maximise collection. The PDCs are designed to capture floating rubbish on both the ebb and flood tide, which are then collected by PLA's driftwood service for recycling and disposal. The project also involves monitoring and analysis to guide the design of a new, bespoke PDC for the lower estuary, where the existing PDCs are not as effective.
