Challenge / Goal

NEXIGEN aims to improve the air quality in the port and the city of Barcelona by reducing 66,000 tonnes of CO2 and 1,234 tonnes of NOx. NEXIGEN sets the goal of electrifying 50% of container and ferry wharves by 2025. To that end, in 2022, two pilot projects were launched to connect the BEST container terminal and the Terminal Ferry Barcelona.

Solution

NEXIGEN will implement Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technology to provide electrical power to ships operating in the port, especially cruise ships, container ships, ferries, car carriers and liquid bulk carriers. This allows them to shut down their auxiliary engines while docked, using clean energy generated within the port or certified as 100% renewable in origin.

The three crucial actions of the project up to 2026 are:

OPS pilot at BEST container terminal (Total Power 9MVA):

  • Three OPS connection points will be installed for container ships, with a maximum power of 7.5 MVA for a single container ship, and with the possibility of simultaneous supply to two smaller ships, with a maximum power of 4 MVA each.
High Voltage Shore Connection (6.6 kV).
  • 50 or 60 Hz available.
  • Although the OPS installation of this project will be sized to supply a maximum power of 7.5 MVA (6 MW) in an initial phase, the APB has opted to make a power reserve of up to 9 MW from the current electricity distributor of this terminal.
  • First connection expected in 2024.

OPS pilot at  TFB ferry terminal (Total Power 4MVA):

  • Two OPS connection points will be installed with the capacity to supply one single ferry, and a maximum power of 4 MVA. In order to carry out the pilot tests of this terminal, it has been decided to request 2.5 MW from the electricity distributor in the area.
  • High Voltage Shore Connection (6.6 kV).
  • 50 or 60 Hz available.
  • First connection expected in 2024.

Construction of the port electrical substation (SS Port) (Total Power 80 MW):

  • Construction of the port electrical substation 220/25 kV connected by a new 220 kV high voltage line to a position in the transmission grid requested to the general distribution network managed by Red Eléctrica Red de España (REE).
