Busan Port’s Smart Piezoelectric System for Port Gates is utilizing the ports’ characteristics to produce green energy from the vibrations and pressure generated by cargo trucks. The project is expected to generate 2,115MW of electricity per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 936.522 tons.
Challenge / Goal

Establish eco-friendly and self-sufficient goals for energy generation, to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% of 2018 levels by 2030, to cope with the increase in electricity use due to the electrification of ports

Solution

Introduce piezoelectric energy generation, which has low installation costs and minimal space requirements, to utilize the unique characteristics of port as a source of pressure and vibration, to donate part of the profit from the power generation to nearby fishing villages and local communities
