Challenge / Goal
Ports like those in Vigo, Gijón, and Valencia faced challenges with waste mismanagement, non-compliance, and lack of transparency. Inefficient handling of ship-generated waste led to missed opportunities for recycling and circularity. PortNet was initiated to address these issues by providing a unified system that improves accountability, ensures regulatory compliance, and facilitates waste traceability, thereby reducing the environmental footprint of port activities.
Solution
PortNet implemented a blockchain-based tool called the "WastePassport" to track waste from its generation to its final disposal or reuse. Each step in the waste handling process, including origin, type, and destination, is recorded on the blockchain, ensuring complete transparency. Additionally, the system created a secondary market for reusable waste materials, helping to promote circular economy practices within ports. Stakeholder collaboration and blockchain integration were key to the project's success, offering secure, tamper-proof data that facilitates better decision-making.
