Challenge / Goal
To sustain the health of biodiversity in the waters and land of Abu Dhabi, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. To minimize and manage the impacts of port infrastructure and operations on marine and terrestrial ecosystems. To enhance the ecological function and diversity of existing and future port structures.
Solution
The ETS unit of AD Ports Group leads extensive initiatives such as:
- Relocating 500 corals from Khalifa Port to the environmental breakwater next to the Ras Ghanada Reef, in collaboration with EAD, NYU and GHD. The corals are monitored for three years to assess their health and survival. NYU has developed a coral relocation best practice guide based on the results.
- Installing eco wall panels on concrete quay walls to provide better refuge for intertidal species, in partnership with ADQ.
- Installing ecological articulated concrete mattresses to encourage the growth of marine flora and fauna and increase species richness.
- Undertaking environmental management and mitigation measures throughout infrastructure construction and operations, such as monitoring air pollution, protecting ecosystems, and managing water pollution on land and sea.
