PuertAlMar is a project that aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the port of Vigo by creating artificial structures that mimic natural habitats and attract marine biodiversity. It also involves awareness-raising activities and collaboration with the fishing and aquaculture sectors.

Challenge / Goal

To achieve a balance between industrial activities and ecological quality in the port of Vigo, to comply with the EU Green Deal, Marine Directive, and Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of nature-inclusive infrastructure in ports.

Solution

To design and install innovative structures that recreate lost marine habitats within the port, using biomimetic techniques and eco-friendly materials. To monitor the biological, structural and noise pollution reduction effects of these structures. To engage with the local community and stakeholders to promote the blue growth agenda and the conservation of marine resources.
