Challenge / Goal

The port aims to improve air quality and reduce carbon footprint by enabling shore power-enabled ships to switch off their engines while in port and use electricity from the National Grid. The port also wants to support the decarbonisation goals of its cruise customers and the UK Government's green maritime agenda.

Solution
  • The port invested in two shore power connections, one at the new Horizon Cruise Terminal and one at the Mayflower Cruise Terminal, with a total capacity of 40 MVA.
  •  The port worked with Powercon as the main contractor and received a grant from the Solent Local Growth Deal through the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership
  •  The port also collaborated with multiple cruise lines to commission their ships for shore power use.
