The Port of Vancouver offers shore power for cruise and container ships, allowing them to plug into low-emission hydroelectric power and reduce air and noise pollution. Shore power has prevented over 30,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions since 2009.

Challenge / Goal

Reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from ships at berth, while balancing the growth in trade and the quality of life of neighbouring communities.

Solution

Installing shore power connection points at three terminals and offering discounts on harbour dues for shipping lines that use shore power. Collaborating with various stakeholders, including the federal and provincial governments, terminal operators, shipping lines, and BC Hydro to fund and implement the project.
