Challenge / Goal
The port faced the challenge of cutting its energy bill and reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining its operational efficiency and supporting the local community.
Solution
The port partnered with Brighton Energy Co-operative, a local organisation that promotes community-owned renewable energy, to install solar panels on the roofs of its warehouses. The solar panels have the capacity to generate up to 214kWp of electricity, which is used on site to power offices, a repair workshop and other port operations. The electricity production also displaces carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. The project is financed by local people investing in the co-operative with a 5% interest rate, which creates a social benefit as well as an environmental one.
