Challenge / Goal
Cruise terminals are major consumers of fossil fuels, contributing to high greenhouse gas emissions. LCP sought to mitigate its environmental impact by transitioning to renewable energy. The challenge was to find a solution that reduced its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. With global pressure mounting for industries to adopt cleaner practices, LCP initiated this project to position itself as a sustainability leader in the cruise industry.
Solution
LCP developed a plan to install solar panels on the air bridges, utilizing unused space effectively. The generated solar energy will cover 38% of the terminal's annual consumption, drastically reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative also includes selling approximately 36% of the energy produced back to the power grid or local energy communities. This dual approach ensures that LCP not only powers its own operations sustainably but also contributes to local energy independence, helping surrounding areas reduce their overall carbon footprint.
