Challenge / Goal

The challenge is to optimize sea traffic navigation in the Eastern Mediterranean region, which is a busy and complex area with many potential hazards and environmental impacts. The goal is to enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of the Port of Limassol and Cyprus ports in general, as well as to promote short sea shipping as a viable alternative to road transport in the region.

Solution

The solution is to implement the following components:

Port Collaborative Decision Making Platform (Port CDM): A platform that enables real-time situation awareness and information exchange among all participants involved in maritime activities in the ports of Cyprus, such as port authorities, terminal operators, shipping agents, customs, etc. This allows for better planning and coordination of port operations, reducing delays, costs and emissions.
Limassol Shore Center (LCS): A communication hub that provides various services to ships in the Eastern Mediterranean region, such as route optimization, weather forecasting, traffic monitoring, emergency response, etc. This helps to improve the safety and efficiency of sea traffic navigation, as well as to avoid possible dangers and conflicts.
New technological solutions: These include real-time information on ship movements, the environment and cargo tracking, using sensors, satellites, drones and blockchain technology. This enhances the transparency and security of maritime transport, as well as the environmental sustainability of the sector.
Advanced data analytics services: These provide valuable insights and recommendations to maritime stakeholders, such as port authorities, shipping companies, policy makers, etc., based on the data collected from the above components. This supports decision making and strategic planning for the maritime sector in the region.
Living labs: These are workshops that bring together the expertise of all relevant maritime stakeholders, such as port authorities, shipping companies, terminal operators, shipping agents, customs, etc., to drive the various project activities and evaluate the final outcomes of the project. This fosters collaboration and innovation among the maritime community in the region.
