Challenge / Goal

The challenge is to protect the terminal infrastructure, cargo, and personnel from the impacts of extreme rainfall and storm surge events, which are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. The goals are to improve the stormwater management capacity, reduce the risk of flooding and water damage, and enhance the environmental performance of the terminal.

Solution

The solution consists of three main components: a new large storm drain pipe to increase stormwater drainage capacity; tidal gates to prevent tidally influenced water from entering the storm drains; and a 32” sea curb surrounding the Terminal to prevent overtopping of floodwater during storm surge events. These measures will help divert excess water away from the terminal and prevent water intrusion and pollution.
