Challenge / Goal

The port of Hamburg is located in the city center, which makes it subject to public scrutiny and pressure to protect the environment and the climate. The fleet faces the challenge of meeting the high standards of environmental protection set by the City of Hamburg, as well as operating at a profit and being an innovation driver for other public and private ship operators in the port and beyond

Solution

The fleet has adopted a five-pillar concept for its environmental strategy, which consists of: 1) Use of innovative, low-emission fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen or biofuels; 2) Exhaust gas treatments in new buildings, such as fine particle filters and nitrogen acid catalytic converters; 3) Retrofit with exhaust gas treatments for existing craft, where possible; 4) Use and testing of innovative propulsion technologies, such as hybrid plug-in propulsion or electric motors; 5) Energy–efficient ship operation, such as optimizing routes, speeds and power consumption .
