Challenge / Goal

The goal was to tackle the historical pollution caused by TBT, a harmful compound found in old ship paint. The sludge, which had absorbed TBT over decades, posed a significant environmental risk, affecting the aquatic ecosystem, particularly mollusks. The project aimed to improve water quality to meet European standards.

Solution
  • Research and Development: Conducted extensive research with the University of Antwerp to find methods to remove TBT from the sludge.
  • Pilot Project: Launched a pilot project in 2018 to test and refine the dredging and processing methods.
  • Dredging: Used specialized equipment to dredge the contaminated sludge with minimal disturbance to surrounding water.
  • Transportation and Processing: Transported the sludge to the AMORAS plant where it was treated, including the addition of activated carbon filters to remove toxins.
  • Water Treatment: Ensured that the treated water met environmental standards before being returned to the docks.
  • Filter Cake Production: Processed the sludge into dry filter cakes for safe storage and potential reuse.
