Challenge / Goal
The port terminal faced the challenge of managing a large amount of waste produced by its activities, which had negative effects on the environment, public health, and resource efficiency. The goal was to eliminate the disposal of waste to landfills and to reuse all the waste in some way, either by recycling, composting, co-processing, reverse logistics, or energy recovery.
Solution
The project implemented a CDRU (Fuel Derived from Urban Solid Waste) plant, which converts waste into fuel for cement kilns, using a process that does not generate new environmental liabilities. The project also installed a bio-digester for the organic food waste from the operational cafeteria, and adopted other waste management practices such as recycling, reverse logistics, composting, etc. The project also invested in expanding and modernizing the terminal's facilities and equipment, such as electrifying the rubber tyred gantry (RTGs) container handling cranes, using an overhead cable system.
